Working With The Valley To Be Safe Around Water

When you are Around Water Think Safety First!

We care about your safety around water, and we are committed to providing you with the tools to be safe around it at all times. Continued safety around water is a shared responsibility. According to the Arizona Department of Health Services pool drownings are the third most common cause of unintentional injury related deaths which is why we are partnering with local community groups, agencies, and organizations to help increase awareness and promote water safety. If children will be around water, whether at the lake or the pool, it is important to assign adults that are capable and who know how to swim and perform CPR in case of an emergency to be water care takers.

Pool Safety Tips:

  • Enclose your pool with a self closing, self locking fence with vertical bars.
  • Have multiple barriers in place as an added safety measure.
  • Whether you’re near a pool, or in it, make sure pool gates are locked after someone enters or exits the pool. NEVER prop a pool gate open.
  • Always be aware of water puddles and play structures that may be safety hazards.
  • Move your outdoor furniture inside of the pool fence to prevent children from using them to climb over the fence.
  • Make sure to also remove any toys from the pool area that might attract children.
  • Lock all doors and windows and secure dog doors that lead to pools.
  • Empty kiddie pools and buckets.
  • Create habits to close doors to laundry rooms and bathrooms.
  • Knowing CPR can save lives. Learn how to perform CPR on infants, children, and adults.
  • Teach all children to swim and remember it’s never too late for adults to learn how to swim.
  • It’s also important to teach children about water safety around open water such as pools, lakes, and canals especially in Arizona.
  • Please be aware of undertows and teach children about all of the dangers of water currents in all bodies of water, including but not limited to streams, rivers, lakes, canals, and pools.
  • Never depend on floating toys, these things are not designed to save a life. Always use approved life saving devices such as life jackets.
  • Make sure to look for the U.S. Coast Guard approved label on life jackets and ensure they fit properly by height and weight.
  • Pool safety is critical which is why Child Crisis Arizona and United Phoenix Firefighters continue to address water safety. They have created the Pool Fence Safety Program which is designed to provide families in need with the opportunity to apply for a free pool fence.
